OWASP Testing Guide

A free, community-driven, vendor-neutral framework for testing web application security.

What It Is

The OWASP Web Security Testing Guide (WSTG) is maintained by the Open Web Application Security Project, a nonprofit foundation that produces free, publicly available application security resources. The guide covers information gathering, configuration and deployment management testing, identity and authentication testing, session management testing, input validation, business logic testing, and client-side testing — giving testers a comprehensive, structured reference for assessing a web application from the outside in.

Why It's Still Relevant

OWASP remains the most widely referenced standard for web application security testing anywhere in the industry. The related OWASP Top 10 is the de facto baseline risk list cited across security programs, vendor documentation, and job postings alike. Because it's free, vendor-neutral, and maintained by a large, active open community, it stays current with how real applications are actually built and attacked today. Several compliance frameworks, including PCI-DSS, explicitly reference OWASP guidance as an acceptable testing approach.
