SOC 2
An American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) auditing standard built around 5 Trust Service Criteria: Security, Availability, Processing Integrity, Confidentiality, and Privacy.
What It Is
SOC 2 reports are produced by licensed CPA firms following an independent audit, evaluating how a service organization's controls meet the Trust Service Criteria it selects. Security (the "Common Criteria") is always in scope; the other four are optional, chosen based on what the organization's customers actually need assurance about.
Why It Matters
For SaaS and cloud-service vendors selling into the US market, a SOC 2 report is often a hard prerequisite before a deal can close — enterprise procurement and security-review teams routinely request it during vendor onboarding.
